چکیده

a 3.5 to 4 fold higher risk of CAD mortality compared to non-diabetic women in the Framingham study. Follow up data for upto 24 years confi rmed the higher mortality rates among diabetic subjects and also a cumulative effect of age and diabetes.15 Co-existence of multiple risk factors among diabetic subjects has been shown to dramatically increase the mortality rates compared to non-diabetic subjects. The Organization to Assess Strategies for Ischemic Syndromes (OASIS) study showed that diabetic subjects without prior CAD had a similar risk for developing CAD as non-diabetic subjects with prior CAD.4 This was confi rmed again by the studies by Haffner et al5,16 who proposed that the clock for CAD starts ticking from the stage of IGT itself.

The effect of glycemic control on the incidence of macrovascular complications of type 2 diabetes.

Of all the complications of diabetes mellitus, macrovascular complications, ie, large-vessel atherosclerosis, account for the largest share of morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditures. Whereas there is now highly persuasive evidence that glycemic control reduces the risk of microvascular complications in type 1 diabetes, and probably in type 2 diabetes as well, such evidence is unavai...

PROactive 07: pioglitazone in the treatment of type 2 diabetes: results of the PROactive study

Patients with type 2 diabetes face an increased risk of macrovascular disease compared to those without. Significant reductions in the risk of major cardiovascular events can be achieved with appropriate drug therapy, although patients with type 2 diabetes remain at increased risk compared with non-diabetics. The thiazolidinedione, pioglitazone, is known to offer multiple, potentially antiather...

Protective role of imatinib in atherosclerosis.

The “metabolic syndrome,” also known as the insulin resistance syndrome or syndrome X, provides an effective framework for investigating the increased cardiovascular risk factors and adverse events related to atherosclerosis.1–3 Metabolic syndrome includes obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and impaired glucose tolerance. An increasing body of evidence in both human and mouse studies now sugg...

Relation of Asymmetric Dimethylarginine Levels to Macrovascular Disease and Inflammation Markers in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

AIM. We aimed to determine the relation of asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) levels to atherosclerotic vascular disease and inflammation markers in type 2 diabetes. METHODS. We recruited 50 type 2 diabetic patients with atherosclerosis, 50 type 2 diabetic patients without atherosclerosis, and 31 healthy control patients into our study. We obtained fasting serum and plasma samples and measured...

Serum vaspin concentration in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and macrovascular complications

BACKGROUND Adipose tissue, an endocrine organ of the body, is involved in some obesity-related disease states such as insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and atherosclerosis. Vaspin is a novel adipocyte with insulin sensitizing effects. In this study, we planned to estimate serum vaspin concentrations as related to glycemic status and the presence of macrovascular complications among elderly...
